Not in the mood to fight the fascists today

Tomorrow, however, I will be back to a withering level of acerbic wit. For today, I offer this:

At a Native American gathering in Arizona for the 1999 summer solstice, a Hopi elder said: “There is a river flowing now, very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold on to the shore. They will feel they are being torn apart and suffer greatly. Know that the river has its destination. The elders say we must push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open and our heads above the water. See who is in there with you and celebrate. At this time in history we are to take nothing personally, least of all ourselves, for the moment we do that, our spiritual growth comes to a halt. The time of the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves; banish the word ‘struggle’ from your attitude and vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred way and in celebration. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

About vvpublishing

Although a bit premature, you can read my obituary on my website. After giving my mom some relief showing up as a nine pound baby boy at Sister of Charity Hospital in Buffalo New York, I ventured west with the USAF as soon as I could to escape a family business. Upon a mostly honorable discharge, I landed in Sedona, picked weeds, poured coffee, and worked in one of the areas famous orchards until getting a couple of degrees from the local university. I began to marry and divorce and had three children in the process. I began attempting to teach English to the northern Arizona masses although certain local businessman felt that since I was Italian, I should open a shoe repair shop.. I taught at Page High School, Mingus Union High School and Yavapai College in a career of over 30 years and counting. I should have taken the businessman's advice.

One Response to Not in the mood to fight the fascists today

  1. Keeping our eyes open is easy enough…keeping our heads above water, not so much. Politics is what you do while hoping you won’t really have to build an ark. Are the Hopis seafarers, I wonder?
