DORR gets new board members

Submitted 2008-01-29

and the Verde Valley Democrats have their own Democratic Preferential Preference Debate

On Wednesday evening, January 23rd, the DORR Board met for the monthly Board meeting and elected three new Board Members to fill in three vacancies. Karen Keller, Phyllis Martinec and Carolyn Gonzales were elected to the Board and introduced to the General Meeting which followed. DORR is very fortunate to have these three activists as member of its Board especially in such an important election year.

And following the Board Meeting, DOVV and the Progressive Democrats joined DORR to welcome members for a joint General Meeting which took the form of a Democratic Presidential Debate. Over eighty were present to listen to speakers representing Obama, Clinton and Kucinich who was still in the running at that time (the Edwards speaker did not turn up). The speakers were: Former Congressional Candidate Ellen Simon for Obama Phoenix based Regional Campaign Coordinator Rick Romero and Dr.Kevin Greathouse for Kucinich Clinton Campaign Official Dana Kennedy for Clinton

Each speaker gave a short speech as to why he/she was backing their candidate.

There was a lot of talk about the economy and healthcare, though Dr Greathouse spoke for the most part about the war and possible acts of impeachment. Ellen Simon spoke of Obama’s ability to galvanize and mobilize support, while Dana Kennedy stressed Clinton’s ability to focus on getting things done.

The speeches were followed by a lengthy question and answer period. Many of the attendees were interested in healthcare issues, education, immigration and some great questions were thrown at the speakers. Like true politicians, it was tough to get them to give straight answers!

The evening was chaired jointed by Steve Williamson from DORR and Mike Cosantino from DOVV. There were wonderful refreshments, provided by Gerri Thomas-Jantsch and Phyllis Martinec. Everyone was urged to vote in the elections on February 5th, and to give support to the local campaigns here in Sedona and the Verde Valley. It was a great start to an exciting year for DOVV and DORR
